BECKLEY, W.V. – The No. 10-ranked Indiana Tech women's basketball concluded its nonconference slate on a high note as they defeated West Virginia University Institute of Technology, 81-53, on Sunday afternoon at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.
Haley Cook scored a game-high 22 points and recorded four steals while
Keanna Gary racked up her 11
th double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Kendall Knapke chipped in 11 points, four rebounds and six assists while
Bella Lozano-Dobbs added six points, four assists and three steals.
Rachel Bell grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds in the win.
West Virginia Tech would get out to a 5-2 lead over the Warriors two minutes into the game, the first in 12 days for the Warriors, but a pair of free throws from Cook would start an 11-0 run for the Orange and Black, with Cook and Gary each scoring four points during the run to make it a 13-5 game with 5:43 to go in the first quarter. The Golden Bears would respond with two quick baskets on their next two possessions to cut the deficit down to 13-8, but Tech would close out the period with a 12-2 run to lead 25-11 after 10 minutes.
The visitors would continue to build their lead in the second quarter, using a 6-0 spurt to extend their advantage to 21 points with 4:24 to go in the first half. Tech would force six turnovers in the period while limiting the hosts to miss 12 of their 16 shots from the floor as they headed in the break leading 41-19.
WVU Tech would break out of its offensive funk in the third quarter as they outscored the Warriors, 19-17, thanks to an 11-0 run, but Tech would close the period leading by 20 points and would grow their lead to as many as 28 in the fourth quarter to end their nonconference schedule with a 9-1 mark.
Tech (15-2) returns to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action on Wednesday, January 3 as they battle No. 22-ranked Lawrence Tech in Southfield, Michigan. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. from Don Ridler Field House.
