GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Indiana Tech men's lacrosse team defeated Aquinas, 15-14, on Saturday evening in their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) opener at the Aquinas College Athletic Field.
After ending the first quarter knotted up at 2-2, Tech would explode for seven goals in the second period, with
Noah Puckett scoring a man-up and man-down goal while
Will McKinney also added a pair of goals to give the Warriors a 9-7 lead at the half.
The Saints would come out of the locker room outscoring the visitors 4-2 while opening the fourth quarter with two more goals to go up 13-11 with 10:53 left in the game. The Orange and Black would answer back though by scoring three straight goals in the next seven minutes to take a 14-13 lead at 3:35 in the quarter, but Aquinas would tie the game up nine seconds later to set up the dramatic finish.
After holding off a Saints offensive possession and clearing it into their defensive zone, head coach
Bryan Seaman would call a timeout to set up a play for his team. The end result from
Chandler Peterson scoring the game-winning goal with 70 seconds left in the game while Tech's defense forced a pair of turnovers late to start off conference play with a win.
Joe Dosen made nine saves in the win while McKinney finished with four goals and seven ground balls. Peterson and
Jace Childs each recorded a hat trick while the latter added six ground balls.
Tech (5-1, 1-0 WHAC) returns to action Monday as they host No. 7-ranked Ottawa in nonconference action. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. from Warrior Athletic Field.
