FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 4-ranked and top-seeded Indiana Tech men's lacrosse fell to fourth-seeded Aquinas, 18-17, in overtime on Wednesday evening in the semifinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament at Warrior Athletic Field.
Jace Childs would give the Warriors the lead just 63 seconds into the game, but the Saints would come back with two quick goals in the next minute and a half. With the visitors holding a 3-2 lead at the 9:36 mark in the first quarter, Tech would score four goals in the final 3:20 of the quarter to take a 6-3 lead at the first break.
The two teams would trade goals throughout the second period with the hosts holding a 10-8 lead at halftime, but the Saints would come out of the third-quarter intermission firing as they used a 3-0 run to take a 16-15 lead with 6:45 left in the game.
The visitors would hold a 17-16 lead with 2:23 left in the game, but the Orange and Black would cause a turnover after a Saints faceoff win and then convert a man-up advantage with 65 seconds left in regulation as
Brandon Gates tied the game up.
The Saints would win the following faceoff and get a shot on goal with 26 seconds left in the fourth quarter, but
Joe Dosen would stand tall to send the game into overtime.
Both sides would struggle to find their offense in the extra session as they combined for four turnovers, but the Saints would get the game-winner from Sam Klinsky with four seconds left in overtime to knock off the WHAC regular season champions.
Will McKinney and Childs would both score five goals each while
Noah Puckett and Gates dished out four assists apiece. Childs would add seven ground balls while Dosen made a career-high 18 saves.
Mitch Haggart would score a game-high 10 goals in the contest.
Tech (11-5) will now wait to see if they will get an at-large berth to the NAIA National Invitational, which takes place May 4-6 in Greenville, South Carolina. The field for the second annual event will be announced Sunday, April 23.
