SYLVANIA, Ohio – The No. 5-ranked Indiana Tech men's basketball team overcame an 11-point second half deficit to defeat Lourdes, 73-70, in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Ebeid Recreation Center.
Darren Groves scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds while
Dylan Phair had 17 points.
Nic Williams chipped in 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists while
Joel Wincowski and
Scott Schwieterman each had 10 points.
With the Warriors leading 37-33 at the half, the Gray Wolves came out on fire in the second half, using an 22-7 run to take an 60-49 lead with 8:59 to play in the game. Lourdes hit four three-pointers during that stretch while they held Tech scoreless for nearly three minutes towards the latter half of the run.
The Orange and Black recovered quickly though, as they responded with a 13-0 run to take a 62-60 lead with 4:58 left in regulation and forcing the hosts to call a timeout. Lourdes tied the game up at 62-62 out of the time out and snapped a 4:59 scoreless drought with the basket. Back-to-back baskets from Phair gave the Warriors a 70-64 lead with 2:46 to play, but the Gray Wolves came right back with a 6-1 run to make it a one-point game with 83 seconds to play.
An offensive rebound from
Ryan Morey with 34 seconds to go forced Lourdes to foul Wincowski, who calmly sank both free throws to make it 73-70, and the potential game-tying shot from Clif Snow, who scored a game-high 20 points, would not fall as the Warriors moved their win streak to a modest three games with the win.
Tech (21-4, 13-2 WHAC) returns to action Wednesday as they travel to the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. from the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.
