DEARBORN, Mich. – The No. 5-ranked Indiana Tech men's basketball team fell to the University of Michigan-Dearborn in overtime, 91-84, on Wednesday evening at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse.
Darren Groves led all players in scoring as he tied his career-high with 27 points while grabbing 18 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.
Joel Wincowski also notched a career-high in scoring with 25 points and added seven rebounds and six assists.
Nic Williams chipped in 12 points and six rebounds.
The two sides would trade buckets over the first three minutes of the game before a 7-0 run from the Warriors made it a 13-8 game at the 14:14 mark in the first half. Tech continued to hold the lead over the Wolverines for the rest of the half and led by as many as 12 points at the 6:05 mark thanks to an 11-4 run.
UM-Dearborn would rally back each time it looked like the Warriors would break the game open though, cutting the deficit down to six points at two different points late in the half before an 8-0 to close the half would make it a 38-35 game at the break.
The Orange and Black maintained their slim lead through the first 5:20 of the second half before a layup from Jason Penn, who finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds, gave the hosts a 50-49 lead with 14:40 to go in regulation. Back-to-back baskets from Wincowski and Groves gave the Warriors a three-point lead two possessions later, but the Wolverines would get a triple from Gage Throgmorton to tie it up at 53-53.
A 7-0 run by Tech gave them a 66-60 lead with 7:12 to play, but that would not deter the hosts as they answered back with their own 7-0 run to take a one-point lead just over a minute later. The game would be a one-possession contest until the two-minute mark as
Ryan Morey knocked down a three-pointer to give the Orange and Black a 78-72 lead, but that would be the last point of regulation for Tech while the Wolverines ended the half on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 78, with Penn hitting the first of two free throw attempts with nine seconds to play to knot it up.
Dylan Phair would have a chance at the buzzer for the Warriors, but the shot would not fall as Tech headed into overtime for the fourth time in their last seven games.
UM-Dearborn took control in the overtime session as they scored the first six points of the period to increase their run to 12-0 before Groves hit a pair of free throws with 3:12 to play to make it 84-80. That would be as close as Tech would get to the lead though, as the Wolverines held on for the 91-84 win.
Tech (21-5, 13-3 WHAC) returns to action Saturday as they travel to Rochester for a 3 p.m. tip-off from Garth Pleasant Arena.
