SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The No. 6-ranked Indiana Tech men's basketball team returned to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) on Wednesday evening at Don Ridler Field House as they defeated Lawrence Tech, 71-61.
Max Huber scored a team-high 13 points and grabbed five rebounds while
Dylan Phair added 11 points and four rebounds.
Scott Schwieterman chipped in 10 points and five rebounds while
Darren Groves had eight points and 10 rebounds.
Joel Wincowski and
Nic Williams each had nine points each and combined for 11 rebounds.
Tech would start off the contest with a 15-4 run and forcing the Blue Devils to call two timeouts in the first six minutes of the game. Three consecutive three pointers would cap the run with a 9-0 run at the 14:07 mark. LTU would take the next four points before back-to-back triples from Phair and
Mitch Morken would put the Warriors ahead 21-8.
The Orange and Black would continue to hold a double-digit lead for most of the first half, but the hosts would cut the deficit down to eight thanks to a 10-4 run. Tech would hold the Blue Devils scoreless over the last 2:02 of the half though, and a pair of free throws from Schwieterman would give the visitors a 33-23 lead at the half.
Lawrence Tech would open the second half on a 9-5 spurt to cut the deficit down to six points with 16:47 on the clock, but back-to-back baskets from Schwieterman would kick-start an 8-0 run for Tech that would force LTU to call a timeout with 12:47 left in the game and the Warriors leading 46-32.
The Warriors would extend their lead to as many as 24 points at 69-42 at the 5:44 mark thanks to a 21-6 spurt and while the Blue Devils finished the game on 12-0 run and held Tech scoreless over the last 4:27 of the contest, it would not be enough as the Orange and Black held on to win, 71-61.
Tech (15-3, 7-1 WHAC) returns to action on Saturday as they travel to the University of Northwestern Ohio. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. from Racer Gymnasium.
