ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – The No. 5-ranked Indiana Tech men's basketball team got back in the win column Saturday afternoon as they defeated Rochester, 68-66, in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action at Garth Pleasant Arena.
Darren Groves notched his sixth double-double of the season, and third game in a row, with 18 points and 18 rebounds.
Dylan Phair had 17 points and
Joel Wincowski added 14 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Scott Schwieterman chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds.
The two teams traded leads over the first four minutes of the game before Rochester took a 24-16 lead a 6-0 spurt with 6:39 to go in the first half. The host Warriors increased their advantage to 12 points following an 11-5 spurt to end the half and headed into the locker room leading 38-26.
Tech started to chip away at the deficit in the second half though, cutting the lead down to single digits four different times, only to see Rochester extend their advantage back up to 12 points with 13:26 to play in the game. A 16-2 run from the Orange and Black however, gave them a 56-54 lead with 9:23 on the clock, with Phair scoring seven of the 16 points.
The visitors held as much as a four-point lead with 6:37 to play in the game, but Rochester tied the game up at 62-62 with 4:24 to play. The hosts got up 66-64 at the 2:14, but Groves would grab an offensive rebound and get a layup on Tech's next possession to tie the game at 66 with 1:56 to go.
Phair came up with a steal and 41 seconds on the clock, setting up the Warriors for the last shot of the game, and Groves sank a jumper in the paint with eight seconds to play to give the Orange and Black the 68-66 lead and victory.
Tech (22-5, 14-3 WHAC) returns to action next Saturday as they host the University of Northwestern Ohio on Senior Day. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. from the Schaefer Center.
