GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Indiana Tech women's volleyball team fell to Cornerstone, 3-1, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17, 25-22, Friday evening at Mol Arena in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play.
The first set went back and forth between the two conference foes with nine ties and seven lead changes. The Warriors held a 17-16 lead, but a 6-0 run from Cornerstone had the visitors in a 22-17 deficit. Tech countered with a 5-1 spurt, but it was not enough as the hosts took the first set, 25-22.
The Golden Eagles got out to an 11-6 lead in the second, but the Warriors went on a 7-0 run to take a 13-11 lead. Tech extended their advantage to 16-12 and while Cornerstone made it a one point game at 20-19, they would not be able to retake the lead as Tech tied up the match with the 25-22 win.
Cornerstone came out firing in the third as they hit .346 and limited the Warriors to just eight kills in the set. A 6-0 run from the Golden Eagles made it a 17-10 lead before they went on a 4-0 spurt to make it 24-13. The Orange and Black battled off four set points before CU took the 2-1 lead.
The fourth set saw nine ties in another competitive match. A 5-0 run from CU gave them a 21-17 lead before Tech used a 5-2 spurt to make it 24-22, but the hosts won the match on its third match point attempt.
Olivia Niekamp led the Warriors with 13 kills while
Aubree Eggers had 12 kills, five blocks and a .360 hitting percentage.
Autumn Stokes dished out 18 assists while
Madeline MacDonald had 23 digs.
Tech (12-9, 6-5 WHAC) returns to action Saturday as they take on Aquinas College. First serve is set for 1 p.m. from the Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center.
