FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 3-seeded Indiana Tech men's soccer defeated No. 6-seeded Concordia University (Mich.), 3-2, on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament at Warrior Athletic Field.
In a tightly contested match that saw two ties and three lead changes, it was the Cardinals who struck first in the 58
th minute to take a 1-0 lead. WHAC Newcomer of the Year
Jaxon Simerman tied the match up at 1-1 in the 74
th minute with his eight goal of the season.
Malte Dennert gave Tech the lead two minutes on a penalty kick, but Concordia put some more drama into the tournament game with a goal in the 88
th minute to knot the game up at 2-2. With the clock winding down in regulation and a cross into the box, the Warriors were awarded a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box. With three seconds remaining in regulation,
Brennan Cochran stepped up to the line and sent the Orange and Black into the conference tournament semifinals with his fifth goal of the season as he beat the keeper to the upper left corner.
Ruben Leonardo was credited with the assist on Simerman's goal while
Edwin Rosado made two saves in the win.
Tech (14-4-1) will now take on second-seeded and No. 24-ranked University of Northwestern Ohio in the conference tournament semifinals on Wednesday. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. from Racer Soccer Field at the St. Rita's Sports Complex.
