FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 16-ranked Indiana Tech men's basketball team defeated No. 9-ranked Cornerstone University, 85-68, in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Schaefer Center, to extend their winning streak to eight games in their final home game of the semester.
Dylan Phair scored a game-high 21 points while
Logan Primerano added 14 points and six rebounds.
Max Huber chipped in 11 points while
Darren Groves had 10 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks to collect his ninth straight double-double.
Cornerstone got out to a 20-6 lead six and a half minutes of the game while the Warriors went 1-9 from the field. A pair of jumpers from
Edmond Early, Jr. and a three-pointer from
Darnei Hairston kick-started an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to 22-17 with 9:30 left in the first half. The Golden Eagles scored the next two baskets to push the lead back up to nine points, but Tech countered back with a 10-3 spurt, along with a 3:28 scoreless drought from the visitors, to make it a 29-27 game. A triple from Huber put the Orange and Black ahead with 2:07 to play in the half as part of an 8-0 run that put the Warriors ahead 35-31 at the half.
Five quick points from Phair put the Warriors up 40-31 just 90 seconds in the second half while Tech grew their lead to 11 points with 12:07 to play in the game after a 10-3 spurt. The Orange and Black continued to push their advantage with a 16-point lead at the 8:59 mark. Cornerstone would not go down lightly however, as they went on a 9-0 run to make it a seven-point deficit with six minutes left in regulation. A three-point play from Hairston started a 17-2 run for the Warriors as they pushed their lead to 22 points and never let the lead dropped under 17 points for the rest of the game.
Tech (9-4, 6-0 WHAC) returns to action next weekend after taking a break for finals as they start a four-game road trip by taking on Madonna University. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. from the Activities Center.
