FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's indoor track and field team had strong showing on Saturday as they hosted the Circle Logistics Presents the
Aaron Porter Invite at the Turnstone Center by hitting 18 automatic or provisional NAIA standards in the team's lone home meet of the season.
Coby Bailey and
Jack Machometa hit the provisional standard in the 60 meters with times of 6.91 and 6.90, respectively while
Brandon Smiley took first in the 200m with an automatic qualifying time of 21.33.
Barthelemy Peter won the 400m in an "A" standard time of 48.17 while
Alex Rodriguez won the 800m with a time of 1:58.05. In the 1000m,
Kudzanai Karawira hit the automatic qualifying standard with a 2:28.12 to win the event. Tech took the top six spots in the 3000m with
Cayce Griffin running away with the title in 8:43.67.
Jesse Frimpong took second in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.18 to hit the "A" standard while Bailey ran an 8.14 in the semifinals.
Matteo Madrassi won the pole vault by clearing 4.70m/15-5 to hit the "A" standard while Kadan Branam took fifth in the high jump with a provisional mark of 1.99m/6-6.25. Tech had three jumpers hit the "A" standard in the long jump with
Alfredo Smith (7.20m/23-7.5), Shomari Sommerville (7.08m/23-2.75) and
Malik Johnson (7.08m/23-2.75) taking second, third and fourth, respectively.
Sommerville would win the triple jump with a mark of 14.47m/47-5.75 while Johnson took second with a mark of 14.21m/46-7.5 as both hit the "A" standard.
Nathan Riley won the shot put with an "A" standard throw of 16.70m/54-9.5
Tech will now take a break for finals and the holidays and returns to action on January 12 as they head to Trine University for the Sean Brady/Keith Turner Alumni Open. Meet time is set for 10 a.m. from the Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic and Recreation Center.
