Warriors Hold Off Wolverines to End Regular Season

BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. – The No. 3-ranked Indiana Tech men's lacrosse team ended their regular season on Saturday evening with a 13-12 win over the University of Michigan-Dearborn at Detroit County Day Fieldhouse and wrapped up the number two seed in next week's Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament.

The two sides traded off goals in the first quarter and ended the period knotted up at 2-2 before Tech exploded for nine goals in the second to take a 11-5 lead in the locker room at the break. Noah Puckett started off a four-goal streak for the Warriors 54 seconds into the period while Brandon Gates and Jace Childs scored 14 seconds apart in the 12 minute mark. Will McKinney capped the consecutive goal mark with 10:14 on the clock to give the visitors a 6-2 advantage.

The Wolverines cut the deficit down to 9-5 with 2:05 to play in the first half, but Tech scored twice in the last 75 seconds of the half, with Gates finding the back of the cage at the 1:15 mark while Childs beat the UM-Dearborn keeper with three seconds to go before the horn sounded.

UM-Dearborn rallied back with four goals in the third to cut the deficit to 11-9 and made it a one-goal game with 12:25 to go in the fourth. Childs put the visitors ahead 12-10 with his fourth goal of the game at the 8:14 mark while Brandon Phipps restored the two-goal lead with 1:53 to play. The hosts made things interesting as they scored with 65 seconds on the clock to make it a 13-12 game, but Ian Tyburski won the ensuing faceoff and the Warriors were able to run out the clock for the win and tie their program record for victories in a season.

Childs finished with a team-high five points while Gates recorded a hat trick. Tyburski collected eight ground balls while Evan Shuster made 16 saves in the cage to improve to 8-1 on the year.

Tech (12-1, 6-1 WHAC) returns to action on Wednesday, April 25 as they host No. 3-seeded Siena Heights in the semifinals of the WHAC Tournament. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. from Warrior Athletic Field.
