LIMA, Ohio – The Indiana Tech softball team swept the University of Northwestern Ohio on Friday afternoon to close out their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) slate with an 11-9 mark and clinched a berth in next week's WHAC Tournament for the first time since the 2012 season. Tech won game one, 4-3, and game two, 4-1, at Racer Softball Field.
Tech did all of their damage in the top of the third in the first game of the day as
Ali LeNoue and
Emily Martin kicked off the scoring with a back-to-back RBI doubles to make it a 2-0 game. Two batters later
Sarah Cummings drove in
Abigail Zwicker with a two-out RBI single while
Brianna Glass sent the first pitch she saw back up the middle to score
Lauren Ohnesorge and make it a 4-0 Tech lead.
The Racers slowly chipped away at the lead as they scored single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh, but
Amanda Shonka worked out of a two-out jam in the seventh with runners at the corners and the winning run on first base to finish off the complete game victory. Shonka improved to 7-10 on the season and scatted 12 hits across the seven innings.
LeNoue went 2-4 with a run while
Madison Ohnesorge went 2-3 with a run.
The fourth inning would be the frame that Tech began to work in the nightcap as
Ashley Alvey led off the inning with a first pitch home run to center while Ohnesorge singled up the middle to bring home Glass and extend the lead to 2-0.
Kelsey Reinhardt delivered a clutch two-out pinch-hit RBI single one inning later to plate Zwicker and Alvey and make it a 4-0 lead for the Orange and Black.
The 4-0 cushion was plenty for Alvey who went the distance in the circle and allowed just seven hits and one earned run in her outing.
Bailey Dembinski,
Alexis Vargo and Glass all went 2-4 in the game while Alvey was 3-4 at the dish.
Tech (14-30, 11-9 WHAC) concludes the regular season Saturday as they travel to Calumet College of St. Joseph for a nonconference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. EDT from the Whiting Sports Complex.
