SYLVANIA, Ohio – The No. 3-ranked Indiana Tech men's lacrosse team defeated No. 7-ranked Lourdes, 14-11, on Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium and notched their ninth straight win, and fourth straight against a team ranked in the top-10, in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action.
Tech got off to a quick start as they scored twice in the opening three minutes of the game with seniors
Jace Childs and
Will McKinney each finding the back of the cage at 14:04 and 13:04, respectively. The Gray Wolves struck back with two goals just 54 seconds apart in the middle of the first quarter to knot the game up at 2-2 and the teams headed into the first quarter break tied up at 3-3.
Lourdes struck quickly to begin the second with goals at 12:59 and 12:14 to go up 5-3 on the Warriors, but the Orange and Black ended the half strong as
Brandon Phipps cut the deficit down to a single goal with 27 seconds on the clock while Childs knotted the game up at 5-5 as the halftime buzzer sounded.
The third period saw the Orange and Black outscore Lourdes 5-3, but the hosts were never down by more than two scores and trailed 10-8 heading into the final 15 minutes of regulation. The Gray Wolves tied the game up at 10-10 as they scored twice in 37 seconds in the 11
th minute of the period, but McKinney would score four goals in the final 6:35 of the game, including twice in the final minute of the game, to give the Warriors the hard-fought win.
McKinney finished with a team-best six goals while adding four ground balls. Phipps recorded a hat trick while Childs and
Andrew Neller each picked up five ground balls. Evan Shuster made 14 saves in the cage to improve to 6-0 on the season.
Tech (9-0, 3-0 WHAC) returns to action on Wednesday, April 11 as they host Lawrence Tech. Opening face-off is set for 7 p.m. from Warrior Athletic Field.
