FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's ice hockey team defeated Rochester College, 4-1, Saturday evening at the SportONE/Parkview Ice House to sweep the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) foe in their opening weekend of play.
"I was happy with how we were able to find a way to win even not playing our best game," head coach
Frank DiCristofaro said. I was also happy with how
Ryan O'Toole responded. We left him out to dry a few times and he came up big for use. We have another big conference weekend next week so we'll enjoy this now, but we'll come ready to go at it this week in practice."
Adam Vannelli scored at the 7:13 mark in the first to put the Warriors up 1-0 on their first of two power play goals in the game. Rochester knotted the game up at 1-1 seven minutes into the second on the man-advantage, but Tech responded strong as
Zach Bennett put the hosts back on top with 39 seconds to go in the period to make it a 2-1 game.
The Orange and Black tacked on two more goals in the third as
Joel Holmberg and
Adam Jonak both lit the lamp, with the latter's coming on a short-handed opportunity.
O'Toole made 24 saves in net to pick up his first Tech win while seven different Warriors notched an assist.
Tech (2-0-0, 2-0-0 WHAC) returns to action Friday, October 5 as they travel to the University of Michigan-Dearborn for a conference matchup. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. from the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.
