GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 25-ranked Indiana Tech men's basketball team fell to No. 6-ranked Cornerstone University, 68-57, on Saturday afternoon in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action at Mol Arena.
Max Huber scored a team-high 18 points to go along with five rebounds while
Lucas Lehrman had a career-high 11 points along with four rebounds and two blocks.
Cory McKinney and
Josh Kline each added eight points off the bench, with the former adding four rebounds and three assists and the latter collecting a team-best 10 rebounds.
Tech got out to a 7-3 lead in the first minute and a half of the game and held a 9-6 lead at the 15:47 mark in the first half. The Warrior offense would go quiet for the next 2:07 while the Golden Eagles went ahead 14-12, but back-to-back baskets from McKinney and Huber would allow the Orange and Black to retake the lead at 16-14 with 12:05 to play in the half. Cornerstone then turned to their big man in Sam Vander Sluis, who finished the game with 25 points and 19 rebounds, to kick start their offense as the 2018 All-American scored the next seven points for the hosts to give them a 21-16 lead. A basket from Huber at the 5:48 mark would snap a 6:17 scoring drought for the visitors while a four-point play by
Logan Primerano would make it a two-point game at 26-24 with 3:12 until halftime, but CU would take a 36-25 lead into the locker room following a 7-0 run to close the half.
An 11-2 run from the Golden Eagles would kick off the second half and give Cornerstone a 47-27 lead with 14:34 on the clock, but Tech responded with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit down to 13 points at the 13:12 mark. The defending WHAC champions would grow their advantage back up to 18 points with 5:42 left in the game, but a quick 13-4 run from Tech made it a 62-51 game at the 2:50 mark. The Warriors were able to cut the deficit down to seven points at 64-57 with 1:04 to go, but Cornerstone went 4-4 from the free throw line to ice the game away while holding the visitors off the scoreboard for the rest of the game.
Tech (12-9, 8-3 WHAC) returns to action Wednesday, January 16 as they take on Concordia University. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. from Concordia Gymnasium.
