DEARBORN, Mich. – The No. 16-ranked Indiana Tech women's basketball team defeated No. 22-ranked University of Michigan-Dearborn, 62-56, on Saturday afternoon in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse. The victory extends Tech's winning streak to 16 games, the second-longest current streak in NAIA Division II this season.
Alexis Hill led all scorers with a career-high 20 points while she added nine rebounds, two assists and two steals.
DeAnn Kauffman collected 17 points, three rebounds and two steals while
Kendall Knapke had nine points and eight rebounds.
Bella Lozano-Dobbs led all players with 11 rebounds while adding four points and four assists.
The first five minutes of the game would be a back-and-forth affair with seven lead changes and neither team leading by more than two points. A 6-0 run from the Warriors, with Hill scoring four of the points, put them ahead 14-8 with two minutes to go in the first quarter. Along with a stringent defense that limited the Wolverines to just three points in the last five minutes of the period, Tech would take a 17-10 lead into the second.
A triple from Knapke would start the second, but UM-Dearborn answered with seven straight points to make it a 20-17 game at the 7:07 mark. The Wolverines cut the deficit down to one point with 4:53 to go in the half and eventually tied the game up at 27 at the 2:02 mark, but the Orange and Black would go on a 4-1 run to end the period and take a 31-28 lead into the locker room.
The third quarter proved to be the difference in the game as the Warriors outscored the Wolverines 19-6 in the period, with Tech scoring 11 of their 19 points from the free throw line, while UM-Dearborn went just 2-20 from the floor. The Orange and Black closed out the quarter on a 12-2 run and held the Wolverines scoreless over the final 3:29 of the period to take a 50-34 lead into the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Jenna Szostak gave Tech their largest lead of the game at 19 points with a triple to kick off the fourth quarter, but the hosts would go on an 18-2 spurt to make it a 57-54 game with 2:54 to play. Hill would snap a 4:55 scoreless drought for the Warriors with a free throw at the 1:26 mark that sparked a 5-2 run for the visitors, who held the Wolverines scoreless for nearly the final two minutes of the game as they won 62-56.
Tech (17-1, 9-0 WHAC) returns to action Wednesday as they host Siena Heights University in a WHAC matchup. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. from the Schaefer Center.
