Warriors Knock off Saints in Overtime to Open WHAC Slate

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 22-ranked Indiana Tech men's ice hockey opened Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action Friday evening inside Southside Ice Arena as they defeated Aquinas College in overtime, 3-2.

"I thought our team battled hard tonight," said head coach Frank DiCristofaro said. "O'Toole made some big saves and we got some timely scoring. There are some things we need to clean up to get ready for tomorrow."

Three different Warriors scored while Ryan O'Toole made 28 saves to pick up his first win of the season.

The Saints struck first in the battle between the two conference foes with 4:17 left in the first period, but Tech answered back with a goal from Fabian Franqvist at 16:26 in the second, his first goal of the season. Ryan Attwood put the Orange and Black up 2-1 just two minutes later as he converted a short-handed opportunity.

Aquinas tied the game back up at 2-2 with just under six minutes to go in the period, and the two teams needed overtime to settle the conference opener after a defensive showcase in the third as O'Toole made eight saves while Saints goalie Roman Malkov stopped 12 shots in the period.

Alex Potter netted his first goal of the season with 36 seconds left in the overtime session to give the Warriors a big two points in the standings with the game-winner. Mike Tish and Zach Bennett recorded the assists while Adam Vannelli and Cameron Wirick picked up the assists on Attwood's goal.

Tech (3-1-0, 1-0-0 WHAC) concludes its weekend set on Saturday as they host the Saints in Fort Wayne. Puck drop is set for 5:30 p.m. from the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse.
