FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 22-ranked Indiana Tech men's ice hockey team overcame a first period two-goal deficit against Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) foe Aquinas College on Friday evening as they completed the weekend sweep with a 4-3 victory at the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse.
"I think our special teams, and Bryson's play in net were the story tonight," head coach
Frank DiCristofaro said. "I'm happy for our guys and that we were able to get four points in the conference standings this weekend."
Filip Schultz had two goals while
Cole Barney had three assists.
Bryson Linenburg finished the night with 29 saves to improve to 3-0 on the season. Tech's penalty kill went 4-5 on the night.
The Saints jumped all over the Warriors to begin the game as they scored twice in the first eight minutes of the contest, with their second goal coming on a power play. Tech settled down though, and took advantage of a 5-3 power play to cut the deficit in half thanks to a
Mike Tish goal at the 2:11 mark in the first.
Schultz netted his first goal of the night just 28 seconds into the second to tie the game up at 2-2 while he ended the period with another goal just 37 seconds before the horn to give the Orange and Black a 3-2 lead heading into the final 20 minutes of regulation.
The lead proved to be short-lived though, as Aquinas knotted the game up at 3-3 at the 18:39 mark in the third. The two rivals battled over the next 10 minutes until
Joel Holmberg broke the tie with 8:39 to play with his sixth goal of the season. Tech overcame a short-handed advantage in the and a late push from the Saints to hold on to the win and complete the sweep to begin WHAC play.
Tech (4-1-0, 2-0-0 WHAC) returns to action next weekend as they host No. 4-ranked University of Michigan-Dearborn in a huge WHAC battle. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. from the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse.
