FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 15-ranked Indiana Tech men's ice hockey team completed the weekend sweep of Lawrence Technological University Saturday evening inside the SportsONE/Parkview Icehouse with an 8-5 victory in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action.
"I though tonight was very sloppy, but we were able to pull away there at the end," head coach
Frank DiCristofaro said. "We definitely need to be cleaner in our defensive end moving forward."
Joel Holmberg scored four times in the win while
Francesco Corona had three assists and a goal to match Holmberg's four points.
Ryan O'Toole made 29 saves in the victory while
Adam Vannelli had two assists and a goal.
The first two periods were high-scoring affairs with 10 goals being scored in total, and Holmberg notching all three goals for the Warriors in the first 18 minutes of the game. His first goal of the night came at the 13:36 mark to get the scoring for both teams started before scoring at 8:03 and 3:35, the latter coming on a power play.
Lawrence Tech tied the game up at 3-3 with 17:08 to play in the second while back-to-back power play goals from both teams, with the hosts coming from Holmberg at 15:32. The Warriors defense then got into the scoring as
Nick Papandrea and
Axel Low each found the back of the net on four-on-four opportunities to give the Warriors a 6-4 lead at the end of two periods.
The Blue Devils scored their third power play goal of the game with 19:11 left in regulation to make it a 6-5 game, but the Orange and Black put the game away late with goals from Vannelli and Corona to complete the weekend sweep.
Tech (7-2-0, 5-1-0 WHAC) returns to action next weekend as they travel to Cleary University for a nonconference matchup. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. from the Hartland Ice House.
