Something to Prove, Warriors Return to WHAC Championship Match

BRIGHTON, Mich. – The No. 17-ranked Indiana Tech men's soccer team advanced to the championship match of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament for the second straight season as they defeated fourth-seeded Lawrence Technological 3-2 Thursday afternoon inside the Legacy Center.

The Warriors (15-4-1) will now battle third-seeded Madonna University, who took down second-seeded and No. 21-ranked University of Northwestern Ohio 1-0, in the championship match Saturday, November 16 at 12 p.m. from Warrior Athletic Field. It is the third time in program history (2009, 2018) that Tech has advance to the conference tournament championship.

The Warriors didn't take long to get on the scoreboard as Maxwell Amoako shot one past LTU keeper Max Jewett in the fifth minute to make it a 1-0 game. The game appeared to be headed into the half all knotted up at 1-1 following a successful penalty kick from the Blue Devils in the 41st minute, but Angel de Jorge headed in a free kick from Jaime Tenorio in the 44th minute to give the Orange and Black a 2-1 lead at the break.

The Warriors tried to put the game away in the 76th minute as Jaxon Simerman sacrificed his body with a diving header in the box off the cross from Brendan Sidaway to put the "hosts" up 3-1, but the Blue Devils made things interesting as Kevin Wright got one past Ivan Safranic in the 83rd minute to make it a one-goal game. Tech's defense tightened up though and did not allow another shot on target in the final minutes as the Warriors held on to extend their unbeaten streak to 13 straight games.

Safranic finished the match with six saves while Angel de Jorge got the assist on Amoako's goal.
