Warriors Survive Scare from Blue Devils

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 4-ranked Indiana Tech women's basketball team defeated Lawrence Technological University, 79-64, Tuesday evening in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action inside the Schaefer Center for the teams seventh straight win.

Kyra Whitaker scored a career-high 21 points on 7-9 shooting and went 5-6 from three-point range while Emma Wolfe added a career-high 19 points and two blocks. DeAnn Kauffman and Erika Foy both chipped in 11 points with the former grabbing a team-best 11 rebounds and the latter adding eight rebounds, two assists and two steals to her stat line. Rachel Bell had eight points, seven assists and five rebounds.

The Warriors got out to a 4-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game and never trailed throughout the period as they lead by as many as eight points and led 19-13 at the end of 10 minutes. Whitaker hit a pair of three-pointers in eight minutes of action.

The Orange and Black turned up the intensity in the second quarter thanks to a 10-3 run that put them ahead 33-20 with 4:46 to play until the half. Wolfe hit three triples during the period, including two in the final 2:30 of the quarter, to help spark the outburst, while a three from Kauffman gave the hosts a 17-point lead with eight seconds to play, but the Blue Devils Kendall Fisher hit a jumper at the buzzer to make it a 45-30 game at the half.

The third quarter would be one to forget for the Warriors as they were outscored 21-5 over the period and endured an eight and half minute scoring drought as Lawrence Tech went on a 17-0 run to knot the game up at 47 with 2:16 on the clock. LTU eventually got on top with a jumper from Danielle Hanson to give the visitors at 51-50 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Blue Devils carried the momentum from the third into the fourth as they extended their lead to 60-53 with 5:36 left in the game and kept the Warriors off-balance, but the two-time defending WHAC champions turned on the switch with a triple from Whitaker that sparked a 17-2 for the Orange and Black to give them a 73-62 lead. Whitaker hit three triples during the run while Kauffman and Wolfe also connected from downtown. LTU made it a nine-point game with 47 seconds to play, but it was too late as Tech closed out the game with a 6-0 run to win 79-64.

Tech (7-1, 4-0 WHAC) returns to action on Wednesday, December 4 as they host Madonna University in a conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. from the Schaefer Center.
