LIMA, Ohio – The No. 18-ranked Indiana Tech men's soccer team made history Tuesday afternoon at Racer Stadium as they defeated No. 22-ranked University of Northwestern Ohio, 2-0, in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play and clinched their first-ever regular season conference championship with the victory.
With the regular season conference crown, the Warriors earned a berth in the 2019 NAIA National Championship and will be making their first postseason appearance in the national tournament since 2009, when they won the WHAC Tournament for the first and only time in program history and advanced to the national quarterfinals. It will be the fourth time (1981, 1983, 2009) that Tech will be appearing in the NAIA postseason.
Luke Jones and
Will Harris both scored for the Warriors while Tech's defense did not allow a single shot on goal and surrendered just five shots in all. Jones put the Orange and Black on the board just 10 minutes into the contest as he took
Pep Casas' free kick in the box and sent it home.
Harris doubled the visitors' lead just 10 minutes later as he headed in a free kick from Jones to make it a 2-0 game. Tech's defense tightened up and only allowed one shot the entire first half while limiting the Racers to just four in the second half, with two of those coming off free kicks.
Edwin Rosado picked up the win in goal to improve to 12-2-1 on the season and notched his third clean sheet and the fourth shutout of the year for Tech.
Tech (13-4-1, 10-0-1 WHAC) now turns its attention to the WHAC Tournament where they will be the number one seed and host eighth-seeded University of Michigan-Dearborn in a quarterfinal contest. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. on Saturday, November 9 from Warrior Athletic Field.
