Warriors Use Strong Second Half to Defeat Wolverines in Conference Quarterfinals

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 22-ranked Indiana Tech men's soccer team started its journey towards a conference tournament title Saturday afternoon at Warrior Athletic Field as the 2019 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Champions defeated the eighth-seeded University of Michigan-Dearborn, 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2019 WHAC Tournament.

Maxwell Amoako and Angel de Jorge both scored for the Warriors while Tech outshot the Wolverines 15-11 and held a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal. Ivan Safranic made four saves in the win to post his first career shutout and improve to 2-2 on the season.

The first half featured just nine total shots and just four on goal as both sides had two apiece that were on frame. The Warriors finally broke through in the 64th minute as Luke Jones crossed a ball into the box that was knocked into the goal by a Wolverine defender to make it a 1-0 game. The visitors kept it a one-goal game for the next 20 minutes until Amoako got a ball in the box from Ryan Steele that he was able to put into the back of the net.

Angel de Jorge capped the scoring with a penalty kick goal in the 87th minute for his first of the season.

Tech (14-4-1) advances to the WHAC Tournament Semifinals where they will take on fourth-seeded and 2018 conference tournament champion Lawrence Tech in a matchup of last year's championship game. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. from Warrior Athletic Field.
