ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Indiana Tech men's indoor track and field team concluded their pre-championship schedule this weekend at the Grand Valley State University Big Meet, hitting 10 NAIA automatic or provisional qualifying standards inside Kelly Family Sports Center.
The biggest result of the weekend came in the Warriors lone event on Saturday as the distance medley relay of
Justin Fleming, Desire Akpoli,
Dillan Cerny and
Kudzanai Karawira took ninth and set the school record with an "A" standard time of 10:05.73, the second-fastest time in the NAIA this season.
Jack Machometa ran a personal-best and automatic qualifying standard time of 6.84 to take second in the 60 meters and now ranks seventh in the NAIA.
John Jones ran a 6.89 to hit the provisional mark in the prelims.
In the 200m,
Gairy Springer finished in eighth with a "B" standard time of 21.89 while he was sixth in the 400m with another "B" standard of 48.86.
Qadir Muhammad and
Derek White took seventh and 10
th with times of 48.90 and 49.20, respectively, both hitting the provisional mark. Muhammad would win the 600m in 1:21.70.
Coby Bailey and
Jesse Frimpong crossed the finish line of the 60m hurdles in 8.26 and 8.33, respectively, to hit the "A" and "B" standards. The 4x400m relay of
Barthelemy Peter,
Theo White,
Derek White and
Chale Mcleod finished third in 3:16.28 to set a new season-best in the event and are now fourth in the nation.
Tech now turns its attention to the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Indoor Championships on Saturday, February 16, where the Orange and Black will look to collect their seventh straight title. Meet time is set for 1 p.m. from the Alksnis Athletic and Recreation Building on the campus of Aquinas College.
