FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech softball team was swept by Cleary University on Wednesday afternoon in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play, falling 4-0 and 5-3 at Warrior Park.
Game one was a pitcher's duel for the majority of the contest, with only six combined hits coming from the two offenses. The Cougars scored their first run in the fifth before tacking on three more in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach. The Warriors had runners on first and second with nobody out in the sixth, but Cleary starter Natalie O'Reilly stranded the pair and finished out the game for the victory.
The visitors jumped out early in the Warriors in game two, scoring three batters into the game before tacking on two more in the second to make it a 3-0 game.
Sarah Cummings cut the deficit to 3-1 with an RBI single to score
Brianna Glass while Tech made it a one-run game in the fifth off a double steal attempt with runners at the corners.
A two-out double from the Cougars restored the two-run lead for the visitors in the top of the seventh, but the Warriors would not go down lightly.
Payton Robinson led off the last chance for the hosts with a single and got to third following a pair of ground outs. Another single from Cummings drove in Robinson and cut the deficit to 5-3 and but the game-tying run on base, but the Cougars escaped the jam with a fly out to complete the sweep.
Glass and Cummings each finished with a pair of hits, with the former adding two steals.
Sarah Ratledge threw 3.2 scoreless innings in relief while
Jaden Romero struck out three.
Tech (10-17, 4-4 WHAC) returns to action on Friday as they host Roosevelt University in a nonconference matchup. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. from Warrior Park.
