Tech Enters Weekend With Sweep of Lakers

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech softball team swept nonconference foe Roosevelt University on Friday afternoon at Warrior Park, winning 4-0 and 5-3.

Tech scored their first run just four batters into the game as Nicolle Sierra drove in Brianna Glass with a fielder's choice. Glass, who started off the inning with a bunt single, promptly stole second and third on consecutive pitches to put the pressure on the defense. Glass drove in two of the teams next three runs in the fourth with a double down the right field line while a throwing error allowed Amanda Shonka to score the fourth run of the game.

Shonka pitched six shutout innings and scatted six hits over her outing to improve to 6-7 on the season while Ally Versluys finished out the game and preserving the shutout.

Tech's offense churned out three quick runs in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI double from Ali LeNoue, a bases-loaded walk to Sarah Cummings and a bases-loaded hit batter. Ashley Alvey made it a 4-0 game with a double to the gap in right center while Cummings drove Alvey in two batters later with a double to left.

Alvey took a perfect game into the sixth inning, but was chased with two outs after a walk, an error and a hit from the Lakers. Aly Versulys worked out of the jam and earned the save with a scoreless seventh inning to complete the sweep. Glass and Kari LaFreniere each had two hits while Alvey scored twice.

Tech (12-17) returns to conference action on Saturday as they host Rochester College. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. from Warrior Park.
