BYRON CENTER, Mich. – The No. 6-ranked Indiana Tech men's ice hockey team fell to No. 15-ranked Aquinas College in overtime, 3-2, Sunday evening in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action at Southside Ice Arena.
"We were in a fog until the last seven minutes of the game," head coach
Frank DiCristofaro said. "We need out best players to be our best players and they weren't tonight. O'Toole played a great game and deserved a better fate."
Alex Potter and
Cam Chabot both scored for the Warriors, with the former also picking up an assist for a team-best two points, while
Ryan O'Toole made a career-high 45 saves in the loss.
In a game that was delayed more than 24 hours due to inclement weather conditions that moved through the Grand Rapids area Saturday, the Warriors struggled to get shots on net to begin the game, managing only five shots on goal in the first 20 minutes of play. The Saints got on the scoreboard first with a goal at the 14:34 mark and took a 2-0 lead into the second intermission as they scored again with 62 seconds remaining in the period.
Potter got the visitors going with his fourth goal of the season and 4:59 remaining in regulation while Chabot notched his sixth goal of the season just 2:29 later to tie the game up at 2-2 and send the two rivals into overtime. The extra session was all Saints though as they outshot the Warriors 3-0 and Mason Stewart put the puck in the net with 2:31 on the clock to clinch the win for the hosts.
Tech (16-5-0, 10-2-0 WHAC) returns to action Friday as they start a road series with No. 5-ranked University of Michigan-Dearborn. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. from the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.
