GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Indiana Tech men's indoor track and field team continued its dominance in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Saturday afternoon by winning its eighth straight indoor title inside the Alksnis Athletics and Recreation Building with 253.50 points.
Sophomore
Shomari Somerville was named the Most Valuable Performer of the Meet after recording a trio of top-three finishes and a meet-best 22 points while freshman
Anthony Franklin was named Newcomer of the Year following a pair of two-two finishes. Head coach
Doug Edgar was named the WHAC Coach of the Year for the eighth consecutive season while the Warriors had nine individual champions.
Franklin won the 60 meters in 6.81 while taking second in the 200m with a time of 21.93, finishing behind Madonna' Cortez Cunningham who ran the fastest time (21.61) in the NAIA so far this season. De'Anthony Coleman won the 60m hurdles in 8.04 while
Barthelemy Peter and
Jamir Ferguson won the 400 and 600 in 49.36 and 1:22.78, respectively.
Somerville finished second in the triple jump (14.33m/47-0.25) and high jump (2.01m/6-7) and third in the long jump (6.93m/22-9) while
Tequan Claitt set a meet record in the high jump by clearing 2.15m/7-0.5).
Malik Johnson won the long jump (7.09m/23-3.25) and triple jump (14.40m/47-3) while
Daniel Buell won the weight throw with a mark of 17.34m/56-10.75.
The 4x400m relay of Daunte O'Bannion,
Michael Warner,
Jordan Highsmith and Peter crossed the finish line in 3:22.33 to close out the meet in style for Tech.
The Warriors return to action on March 5 with the first day of the 2020 NAIA National Indoor Championships inside the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.
