FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 12-ranked Indiana Tech women's basketball team began Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play Wednesday evening inside the Schaefer Center and extended its conference winning streak to 15 games with a 75-53 win over the University of Northwestern Ohio.
Alexis Hill had a game-high 25 points and flirted with a triple-double by finishing with nine assists and eight rebounds.
Taya Andrews had 11 points and three rebounds while
Erika Foy chipped in 10 points, four rebounds and two assists.
Kyra Whitaker and
Eileen Salisbury both finished with nine points, with the former adding five rebounds and four assists while the latter had three rebounds and a pair of steals.
The first 10 minutes of the game was an offensive showcased as the two teams combined to go 20-30 from the field, including 7-11 from behind the three-point line, for 47 total points. Tech was just a touch better as they went 13-17 from the floor and 3-4 from downtown for 29 points. The Racers held the early advantage as they led by as much as four at 4-0 and 13-9 at the 8:16 and 5:39 marks, respectively. A jumper in the paint from Andrews started a 20-5 run for the Warriors however, with
Bethany Worm ending the quarter with a bank triple to make it a 29-18 lead for Tech.
The second quarter turned into a defensive struggle as the teams managed to go just 9-30 from the floor and 1-12 from behind the arc. Tech managed to outscore the Racers 11-9 in the quarter, though it took 2:12 to get the first points of the period, and was aided by a 4:34 scoring drought from the visitors to end the half, while Hill nailed a triple right before the buzzer to give the Orange and Black a 40-27 lead at the break.
Tech took advantage of second chance points in the third quarter, outscoring UNOH 12-3 in that category and making use of five offensive rebounds in the period. The Warriors pushed the lead up to 21 points at the 7:46 mark with a 50-28 lead, and never let the lead get back under 16 for the rest of the quarter.
The Warriors continued to put the clamps on the Racers as they held their foes to just 6-14 shooting in the fourth quarter and did not allow UNOH to hit a single three-pointer in the final 10 minutes of the game. Tech used a 10-4 run to push their lead up to 24 points with 3:53 to go in the game and led by as many as 26 as they cruised to the conference win.
Tech (13-1, 1-0 WHAC) is slated to return to action on Wednesday, January 27 with their first road game of the conference schedule as they head to Lourdes University, though the team is actively searching for games next week. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. from the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
