Warriors Top Century Mark, Fly Past Golden Eagles

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women's basketball team went into triple digits in the scoring column for the first time this season as they defeated Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) rival Cornerstone University 101-62 Thursday evening inside the Schaefer Center.

Kyra Whitaker had a game-high 24 points, three rebounds and two assists while Erika Foy had 21 points, 13 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals. Emma Tuominen had 15 points, six rebounds and three assists off the bench while Taya Andrews added 13 points.

Tech got off to a blazing start in the first quarter thanks to an 8-0 run to jump over the Golden Eagles, who were playing their first game since November 17, 2020, and pushed their lead to 13-2 before the visitors took a timeout at the 7:14 mark. The Warriors pushed the action inside the paint as they scored 20 points in the orange area of the court and crew their lead to 32-12 following the first 10 minutes of action, thanks to a 12-2 run over the final four minutes of the period. Foy finished the quarter with 12 points while the team went 12-15 from the floor and 7-10 from the free throw line.

The Golden Eagles began to shake off the rust in the second period though, keeping pace with the high-flying Warriors by holding them to just two points over the first four minutes of the quarter. Cornerstone cut the deficit down to 16 thanks to five points from Shelby Nyboer, who finished the night with 22 points, but the Orange and Black ended the half on a 12-5 spurt to take a 52-29 lead into the break.

Both sides struggled to shot the ball well in the third quarter, with Tech going just 6-18 from the floor while the Golden Eagles were 5-19 during the period, while the two teams combined to go just 1-9 from behind the arc. The Warrior lead grew to 30 points by the 4:32 mark of the period and it continued to grow over the final 10 minutes of the game. Tech found their offensive rhythm again in the fourth with an 11-13 performance and 5-7 showing from downtown to put up 28 points while leading by as many as 42 en route to the 101-62 win.

Tech (14-1, 2-0 WHAC) returns to action on Wednesday, January 27 as they continued WHAC action with their first road matchup of 2021, and first game outside of Kline Court since December 15, against Lourdes University. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. from the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
