FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 9-ranked Indiana Tech men's soccer team continued their historical season Saturday afternoon as they defeated William Penn University, 2-0, in the championship match of the 2021 NAIA National Championship Opening Round – Fort Wayne Bracket at Warrior Athletic Field. The Warriors now advance to the final site, Decatur, Alabama, of the NAIA National Championship and are going to the final site for the first time since 2009 and snapped a two-year losing skid of falling in the finals of the Opening Round.
The Warriors didn't waste any time in letting the Statesmen know that they weren't about to lose their final game of their home turf for the third straight year as
Maxwell Amoako found
Luke Jones in the sixth minute who fired it into the top left corner from outside the box to make it a 1-0 game. Both teams traded shots over the next 40 minutes, with Tech holding a slim 7-6 advantage in shots while holding a 1-0 lead at the break,
The one-goal lead held until the 70
th minute as
Jaxon Simerman found Amoako through a throng of Statesmen defenders and the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Offensive Player of the Year slipped it past the William Penn goalkeeper for his 19
th of the season to extend the Warriors lead to two goals. Amoako now stands alone for second place for goals in a single season and trails just the 25 scores by Billy Krips in 2000.
William Penn had a shot in the 81
st minute to get on the scoreboard but
Jaume Salvado made the stop to keep the shutout intact for the team's 15
th clean sheet of the season and the eighth for Salvado. The Warriors have shutout four of their five opponents so far in postseason play, with Aquinas being the only team to score back in the WHAC Semifinals.
Tech (18-1-3) has tied the most wins in a single season (2020 and 1981) and will take on No. 4-ranked University of Mobile in the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Championship on December 2 at 8 p.m. ET from the Jack Allen Soccer Complex in Decatur, Alabama.
