FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's basketball team opened up their home schedule for the 2021-22 season with a resounding 100-65 win over Indiana University Northwest inside the Schaefer Center.
Cory McKinney had a game-high 21 points on 8-11 shooting to go along with five rebounds, six assists, two steals and a highlight block.
Grant Smith had 11 points and 10 rebounds while
Rog Stein and
Blake Davison each had 10 points, with the former adding three rebounds and three assists and the latter collecting six rebounds.
The RedHawks kept pace with the Warriors early, leading 12-10 with 14:39 left in the first half. A layup from McKinney started a 16-0 run for Tech though, with McKinney scoring the last seven points of the run, including a three-pointer and fast break dunk, to put the Orange and Black up 26-12 at the 10:10 mark. IU Northwest took a timeout and snapped a 4:48 scoring drought, but the Warriors kept the pressure on the visitors as they kept the lead in double digits until the 6:03 mark, but a bucket from Smith with 4:18 to play in the half pushed the lead back to double digits and the Warriors took a 45-35 lead into the locker room.
Tech started the second half on a 10-2 run and never looked back as they pushed the lead to as many as 40 and never let the lead dip under 20 after the 11:35 mark. The Warriors shot 52.8% from the floor while limiting the RedHawks to a 21.6 shooting clip to run away with their home opener.
Tech (2-2) starts conference play Wednesday as they travel to Cornerstone University. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. from Mol Arena.
