FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Women's basketball remains undefeated in the WHAC while notching win number 21 for the season with a 69-54 win over Concordia earlier tonight.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before the Warriors responded with a 9-0 run to lead 9-4. A three from Concordia lessened the Warriors' lead but did not slow Tech down. A layup from
Alexis Hill followed by a three-point play from
Erika Foy and then another jumper gave the Warriors a seven-point lead with just 1:45 left in the quarter. Each team had a two-pointer and as the period ran out Concordia snuck in a three to get within four of the Warriors heading into the second quarter.
At the 7:49 mark of the second quarter the Cardinals tied the game at 18-18 before taking back the lead 20-18. The did not last long as under a minute later Tech tied the game at 20-20 and had a pair of free throws from
Foy to gain a 22-20 advantage. The Cardinals responded to tie the game once again until
Eileen Salisbury hit a three which jump started the Warriors into a scoring frenzy. Tech recorded a 6-0 run to lead 28-22 with 3:26 left in the half. The Warriors were able to fend off a valiant effort by the Cardinals at the end of the half and hold their largest lead of the game yet 37-28.
The first four minutes of the third quarter the two teams traded baskets with the Warriors never allowing the Cardinals to get closer than seven points. Tech earned an 11-point lead with 4:36 left in the third with baskets from
Bethany Worm and
Emma Tuominen about 45 seconds apart for the Warriors to lead 47-36.
Tuominen struck again at the end of the quarter scoring the final four points for Tech while Concordia snuck in a three-pointer before the buzzer again to be within ten (51-41) heading into the final ten minutes of play.
Just 15 seconds into the fourth
Hill makes a layup only for the Cardinals to respond with a fast break three just 30 seconds later. The two teams started trading points, but Concordia was unable to get within 11-points of the Warriors. Tech remained in control and won the game 69-54.
Foy led the Warriors with 22 points while
Tuominen recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Hill also earned a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Hill led the team with five assists and tallied two steals. As a team, the Warriors shot 46.6 percent from the floor, 50.0 percent from three-point land and 85.7 percent from the free throw line. Tech had 42 points in the paint, nine fast break points, six second chance points and 20 points off turnovers.
The Warriors are back in action Saturday, February 20
th as they travel to Rochester for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
