Biggs Notches 200th Career Win as Warriors Hold Off Saints

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 11-ranked Indiana Tech women's basketball team defeated Aquinas College, 58-55, Monday evening inside the Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center to remain undefeated in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play. Ninth-year head coach Jessie Biggs recorded her 200th career victory with the win and becomes just the second head coach in program history (Gary Cobb) to get to the 200-win mark.

Erika Foy had a team-best 16 points and 10 rebounds her for fifth double-double of the season while adding four assists. Alexis Hill and Emma Tuominen had 12 points each, with the former adding six assists, three rebounds, and two steals, while the latter had six rebounds.

The Warriors jumped out to a 9-2 over the first 2:20 of the game and forcing the Saints, playing their sixth game in eight days, to call an early timeout. Tech pushed the lead up to 18-6 following a 7-0 spurt that featured four points from Foy and a triple from Whitaker. The Saints did chop away at the lead as they cut the deficit to 20-14 by the quarter buzzer following an 8-2 run, with six of the points coming to WHAC Player of the Week Marissa Brady, who led all players with 22.

Aquinas continued their assault on the lead as they made it a 23-20 deficit at the 7:35 mark, but the Warriors managed to keep the Saints at bay thanks in part to a three minute scoring drought from the hosts. Tech pushed their lead back up to 11 thanks to a 9-2 run, but Aquinas cut the deficit into single digits right before the half as the Orange and Black took a 35-26 lead into the locker room.

Both sides struggled to find the basket in the third quarter as there were just four combined points and two made field goals over the first five minutes of the period. A jumper from Foy at the 5:00 mark snapped a 4:32 drought from Tech while the Saints did not get their second basket of the quarter until the 3:26 mark after scoring just nine seconds into the second half. The Warriors lead grew to as many as 15 despite only scoring 10 points total in the 10 minutes.

The Saints found new life in the fourth quarter as they outscored the visitors 21-13 and nearly completed the comeback attempt. The hosts used a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to 53-48 with 4:09 to play, but could not score again until the 2:07 mark. Tech suffered a 2:34 drought themselves and went just 5-15 from the field in the fourth, but dug deep to hold on to the lead. Aquinas made it a two-point game with 62 seconds on the clock, but two made free throws from Taya Andrews, along with just two more points from the Saints, kept the game out of reach as the Warriors avoided the upset.

Tech (18-1, 6-0 WHAC) returns to action Wednesday as they travel to Lawrence Technological University. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. from Don Ridler Field House.
