ADRIAN, Mich. – The No. 17-ranked Indiana Tech women's basketball team got back in the win column Wednesday evening as they defeated Siena Heights University, 65-61, inside the SHU Fieldhouse.
Emma Tuominen had a game-high 19 points to go along with eight rebounds and three steals while
Eileen Salisbury had 12 points on 4-8 shooting from three-point range.
Taya Andrews and
Erika Foy both scored nine points with the former adding six rebounds and three assists while the latter had 10 rebounds and a career-best five blocks.
Both teams struggled on the offensive end of the floor in the matchup between the two conference rivals, with the Warriors shooting just 36.8% from the field and 30% from downtown while the Saints, playing without reigning Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Player of the Year Peyton Banks, shot just 37% from the floor. The hosts scored the first basket of the game, a triple from Sha'kyia Parker, one of just four long-range baskets they would convert, at the 6:43 mark in the first quarter, but would not score again until the 1:41 mark. Meanwhile, the Warriors scored 11 straight points, including an 8-0 run over the next two minutes after the first SHU basket to force the Saints to call a timeout with 4:42 to go in the period.
The Saints came out with a 5-0 run to start the second while forcing a pair of turnovers and getting within a point at 11-10 in the first 90 seconds of the quarter. Siena Heights took a 14-12 lead at the 7:19 mark, but Tech came right back back-to-back buckets from Foy and
Kyra Whitaker and entered the locker room leading 26-24.
The Warriors pushed their lead to 34-28 in the first 90 seconds of the third quarter and appeared to grab the momentum, but the Saints showed their toughness with a 14-4 run to go up 42-38 at the 3:27 mark. SHU pushed the lead up to six points and held the Warriors scoreless for a 2:29 stretch, but a foul from the hosts with one second remaining allowed Tuominen to sink a pair of free throws and cut the lead to 48-44 with 10 minutes to play.
Tech kept chipping away at the Saints lead and went back ahead 54-52 with 4:27 to play following a three-pointer from
Bethany Worm. SHU knotted it back up a minute later, but a layup from Tuominen with 2:48 gave the Warriors the lead for good. The Saints kept it close, but the visitors went 5-6 from the free throw line in the final 40 seconds to ice the game away.
Tech (17-2, 9-1 WHAC) returns to action Saturday as they host Concordia University. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. from the Schaefer Center.
