FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 17-ranked Indiana Tech women's basketball team won their third straight game Wednesday evening inside the Schaefer Center with a 69-36 victory over Cornerstone University.
Emma Tuominen had a game-high 14 points in 6-8 shooting while adding six rebounds and a steal.
Eileen Salisbury and
Taya Andrews each chipped in nine points with the former adding six rebounds and two assists while the latter had three rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal.
Erika Foy and
Jules Cutrara each had eight points, with Foy grabbing six grounds.
Kyra Whitaker had seven points and a career-high eight assists.
Tech held the early advantage at 3-0 just 55 seconds into the game, but Cornerstone responded with a jumper and a three-pointer to go up 5-3 at the 7:50 mark. The Warriors answered back with a 7-0 run and held the visitors scoreless for the next 3:21 to go up 10-5 and continued their methodical climb with a 19-12 lead at the break.
While the Warriors pushed the lead to 24-14 in the second quarter, the Golden Eagles did not go down quietly as they used an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 24-22 with 4:31 to play in the half. A fast-break triple from Salisbury snapped a 3:12 scoring drought for the Orange and Black as they ended the period on a 7-0 run and did not allow Cornerstone to score in the final 4:31 to take a 31-22 lead into the locker room.
Cornerstone cut the lead to 31-27 at the 7:31 mark in the third and held the Warriors off the scoreboard until the 6:36 mark of the quarter, but it was all Tech after that. The hosts flipped the tables by holding CU off the scoreboard until 38 seconds were left on the board while running off 15 straight points to push the advantage to 46-28 and never looked back. Tech continued its strong defensive effort into the fourth by allowing just eight points and starting the quarter on a 9-0 run to push the lead to 55-28 and winning their eighth straight game against their Grand Rapids rival.
Tech (19-2, 11-1 WHAC) returns to action Saturday as they travel to the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. from the Athletic Memorial Building on the campus of Henry Ford College in Dearborn.
