Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Yakiwchuk Nets Hat-Trick As Warriors Blank Cardinals

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The No. 5-ranked Indiana Tech women's ice hockey team handled their business, earning a weekend shutout of the Concordia Cardinals, winning by finals scores of 5-0 and 11-0.

The opening game of the series was held on Thursday night at the Arctic Coliseum in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The ACHA's leading goal-scorer, Megan Yakiwchuk, would strike first, scoring on the power play off of the assists from Stephanie Stuart and Sterling Nesbitt. The game also saw Georgia Kusbel net two short-handed goals in the second and third periods, Izzy Pettem-Shand and Hailey Anderson also scored on the evening, as the Warriors would head back to Fort Wayne with a 5-0 win. Mackenzie Addley made 21 saves on the night.

Saturday night was much more of the same, as it was a goal-scoring party during the first two periods, with Sterling Nesbitt starting things off just over one minute into the contest after Stuart found her with a wide-open shot at the net. To nobody's surprise, it was Megan Yakiwchuk who would score later on in the period, after Lauren Younker found her between the circles for an easy back-hand. Just under two minutes later it was Yakiwchuk finding Dakota Bowler, who caught the Cardinal defense sleeping and put herself right by the net, putting it in and making it 3-0. Just two minutes later, it was Arika Trentor doing the same thing, catching the Cardinal defense lacking, putting herself in good position, and Hailey Anderson finding her for an easy goal, making it 4-0 going into the second period. Just under eight minutes into the second period, it was Yakiwchuk who had her second hat-trick of the season, sending in a strike from about 12-feet out, and then finding herself in a one-on-two situation, missing the shot initially, but cleaning up the mess, making it 6-0 Warriors. Stephanie Stuart, Hailey Anderson, Arika Trentor, and Lauren Younker would all score in the second period, taking a commanding 10-0 lead into the final period. Things would calm down in the third, as Nesbitt would score 12 minutes in, but that's would be it, as the Orange and Black would finish off a dominant weekend with a 11-0 home victory. Izzy Varner made nine saves on the night.

The Warriors improve to 18-6-1 (12-0-0 CCWHA) and will take a week off and look ahead to a big weekend series against the No. 3-ranked Adrian College Bulldogs (10-5-1, 7-0-0 CCWHA). The home contest will be on Saturday, February 12th at the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse, with puck-drop coming at 4:00 PM.
