FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The women's hockey team took on the University of Michigan Wolverines in a weekend series beginning Friday night in Ann Arbor. The host Wolverines scored a late goal to win the first game 3-2. On Saturday, back on their home ice, the Warriors routed the Wolverines in a 5-0 win.
The first contest was held at the University of Michigan's campus at the Yost Ice arena. The Wolverines stuck first with the lone first-period goal coming from Ava Gargiulo. Tech found the net for the first time in the game in the second period with a goal from
Izzy Pettem-Shand, assisted by
Ashley Episcopo and
Dakota Bowler. The Warriors scored first in the third period to take a 2-1 lead, with the goal scored by
Megan Yakiwchuk and assisted by
Ashley Episcopo. UofM scored two unanswered to close the game, with goals coming from Maria Di Cresce and Jordan Eliason. Eliason found the net with 37 seconds left to put the game to bed.
Saturday, back in the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse, the Warriors were in complete control.
Lauren Younker found the net twice for the Warriors, scoring in the first period, followed by a goal later in the second.
Sterling Nesbitt and
Avery Johnson assisted her first goal, while her second was unassisted.
Arina Jusczak scored the second goal for the Warriors, with assists coming from
Genessie Williams and
Lauren Younker.
Izzy Pettem-Shand closed the scoring for the Warriors finding the net twice in the third period with assists from
Lauren Younker on her first and Brooklyn Moore on her second. The Warriors outshot UofM 59-19, with
Izzy Varner posting 19 saves in 60 minutes.
Tech is back on the ice at home on November 4 when they host Concordia University (Mich.). The Warriors took down the Cardinals 11-0 in their most recent meeting last season.
