FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 17 ranked Indiana Tech men's basketball team played host to the Aquinas College Saints on Tuesday night in the Schaefer Center. Indiana Tech remains undefeated in WHAC competition with their 75-56 win over the Saints. The Warriors improved to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
Aquinas won the tip-off and started the scoring between the two sides with a Donovan Brown-Boyd lay-in.
Grant Smith, a graduate transfer student, answered with a lay-in assisted by
Josh Kline, a graduate student from Monaca, Pennsylvania. Indiana Tech subbed in
Lucas Lehrman and
Steve Helm with thirteen minutes remaining in half for a change of pace offensively.
The Saints then went on to a 7-0 run with 12 minutes remaining in the first half to take a 17-10 lead. After some Indiana Tech subs, the two teams swapped possessions and points until
Steve Helm knocked down the go-ahead three to take the first lead of the game for the Warriors, 22-21. Helm scored again in the next possession and assisted
Josh Kline in the paint for a three-point lead.
The Saints regained the lead late due to an Overway lay-in and multiple turnovers from the Warriors.
Grant Smith quickly answered with a go-ahead three-pointer to take the two-point lead, 29-27. (Saints) Overway's lay-in tied things up at 29.
Blake Davison went two-for-two from the line with 2:52 remaining into the half after being fouled by Menalito McGee, regaining the Warrior lead. A
Cory McKinney lob to
Grant Smith in transition play increased the Tech lead to 33-30. The Warriors held onto this lead at the half.
The Warriors traded off possessions and scored to begin the second half.
Cory McKinney gave Tech their largest lead in the game with a difficult lay-in receiving contact and sending himself to the line. The Saints answered back only to be shut down by a deep
Grant Smith three, increasing the Warrior lead to five.
With 13 minutes remaining in regulation,
Lucas Lehrman threw it down from a
Rog Stein lob to regain momentum and force a shot clock violation on the Saints in their next possession. The Warriors pushed their lead to seven, leading 47-40. Senior
Jack Luciani entered the game after being out due to a torn ACL, and with him joined
Tyler Canfield,
Jeremy Davison,
Lucas Lyyski, and Connor West to close the game out for the Warriors.
Grant Smith led all scoring with twenty-one points and had five rebounds, three steals, and one assist.
Rog Stein finished with twelve points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Lucas Lehrman contributed ten points and garnered Parkview Sports Medicine Player of the Game along with
Grant Smith.
The Warriors are back in action Wednesday, November 30, when they host Cornerstone University for a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup. Tech is 12-28 against the Golden Eagles, winning their last matchup on January 19, 2022, with a 71-65 final score.
