FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The No. 10-ranked Indiana Tech men's ice hockey team earned their second straight sweep of the WHAC regular season and tournament titles this past weekend, as they defeated Concordia in the semifinal 3-0, and UM-Dearborn in the final 6-1.
With each tournament contest being held at the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse, the #1 seeded Warriors squared off in the semifinal against the #5 seed Concordia Cardinals, who advanced by defeating Lawrence Tech 5-4 in OT the night prior. The Orange and Black struck first, with
Malik Ali taking advantage of a Cardinal mistake, and finding the captain,
Zach Bennett, for a one-timer to go up 1-0 in the first period. Concordia wasn't going to go fall over and let the Warriors have it that easy, as they held Indiana Tech to a scoreless second period, but also weren't able to score themselves. In the third period, it was the transfer from New England College,
TJ Dougan, who found their captain once again, with Bennett finding the net for his second of the contest to put the good guys ahead 2-0. Tech wasn't done scoring, though, with just over one minute to play,
Cole Barney found
Joel Holmberg, who found the freshman,
Malik Ali, to cap off the victory, and send the Warriors to the championship game.
Ty Barnhill would make 15 saves on the night.
With UM-Dearborn scraping by Aquinas, 5-4 in OT on Saturday night, the stage was set for Sunday, Wolverines and Warriors.
The Wolverines struck first on a power-play at the 4:49 mark, but just 13 seconds later, it was the freshman,
Malik Ali, who rebounded a miss from Bennett and tied the game up, and the teams would head to the first intermission tied 1-1. In the second period, it was
Colton Nikiforuk scoring off the assist from
Bobby Frieson and
Alex Arnold. With just over one minute to play in the second period, we saw the highlight of the night, as
Alex Carrothers made a great defensive play, made the UM-Dearborn defender bite on the shot fake, deked around him, and buried the shot, top-shelf, glove side, putting Indiana Tech ahead 3-1 going into the final period. The Orange and Black kept their foot on the gas, as with just over eight minutes to play,
Cole Barney found
Cam Chabot to put Tech ahead 4-1. With the Wolverines pulling their goaltender,
Zach Bennett scored from across the blue lines at the 3:35 mark, pouring it on for the Warriors. But they still weren't done,
Cam Chabot found
Joel Holmberg for a one-timer to finish off the Wolverines, 6-1.
Ty Barnhill had another excellent night in net, as he made 23 saves, and was named WHAC Tournament Most Valuable Player.Â
Indiana Tech will look ahead and await their seeding for the ACHA Men's Division I National Championship, held at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri from March 10-15.Â
