Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Warriors Crush Saints in Weekend Sweep

FORT WAYNE, Ind./GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The No. 6-ranked Indiana Tech women's ice hockey team finished off a historic first regular season in program history. They closed it out with a sweep of the Aquinas Saints by scores of 9-0 and 4-2.

The first contest was held on Friday night at the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse, and the game was all Warriors, all the time. Dakota Bowler netted her 23rd and 24th goals of the season, while Georgia Kusbel netted her 11th and 12th. Megan Yakiwchuk scored her 27th on the year, Lauren Younker scored her sixth, Mikalya Kalverda scored her fourth, Sterling Nesbitt scored her 10th, and Stephanie Stuart scored her fourth, as the Warriors routed the Saints, 9-0. The Saints only managed to put five shots on goal, all of which were saved by Izzy Varner.

The second contest was much more interesting, as the Saints came out in the first two minutes and punched the Warriors in the mouth, scoring two goals. Indiana Tech, as they've done nearly all season, would have quite a response. Kusbel would put the Warriors on the board, scoring a short-handed goal in the first period. Yakiwchuk would score her second of the weekend in the second period, followed by another goal by Kusbel, and the Warriors would take a 3-2 lead into the third period. In the third, it was Yakiwchuk who would score her ACHA leading 29th goal of the season, closing out the scoring for the game, with Indiana Tech winning 4-2. Mackenzie Addley made 18 saves on the night.

The Warriors finished the regular season, 21-7, including a 14-0 record in the CCWHA, earning them the #1 overall seed in this weekend's conference tournament. They'll be playing on Saturday at 1:00 PM at Crystal Fieldhouse in Burton, Michigan with their opponent to be determined between Michigan State, Grand Valley State, Miami (OH), or Michigan-Ann Arbor.
