Huntington Halts Tech Soccer's 371-Day Unbeaten Run

HUNTINGTON, Ind. -- Huntington University knocked off Indiana Tech 2-1 with an 88th-minute game-winner on Wednesday afternoon at King Field. When an HU own-goal in the 44th brought Tech level after an early Forrester tally, the Warriors (1-1-3) seemed on their way to salvaging yet another draw to start 2022 and extending an unbeaten run that dated back to September 9, 2021. HU's Tiago Costa had other ideas however, depositing an Alex Ohonovskyi assist in to the back off the net to earn three points for the home team and deliver Tech it's first loss since a 2-1 setback to Lindsey Wilson College 371 days ago.

The Foresters (5-2) opened the scoring on 12:41 as Nathan Lemmon delivered a cross that found Higor Barbieri near the top of the penalty area. The early service caught the Tech backline and goalkeeper Jaume Salvado off guard while the alert Barbieri popped a header past the flat-footed Warriors for a 1-0 lead.

Tech regrouped and found an equalizer, with the aid of its hosts in the form of an own goal, in the 44th minute.

Costa's late match-winner was one of the last actions of the 90-minute contest, leaving the visitors almost no time recover for another comeback attempt. HU out-shot Tech 15-12 in the match and enjoyed a slight 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Salvado finished with a season-high nine saves. Aaron Asamoah paced the Orange and Black with three shots, two on target. Luke Jones also fired three attempts at HU's Pedro Moreira, who finished with five stops.

The loss is Tech's second-straight at Huntington, following a 1-0 setback in 2019. The teams have now split the last four meetings, each winning twice on home soil between 2018 and 2022.

The Warriors wrap up their pre-conference slate with a 1 PM start at Taylor University up next on Saturday, September 17. TU is the fifth and final Crossroads League member to line up against Tech in 2022, after previous matches with Indiana Wesleyan, Grace College, Goshen College, and today's clash with the Foresters.
