UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. – Indiana Tech women's soccer rode two first-half goals to down Governor's State University 2-0 on the road Wednesday afternoon. The win evens the Warriors' record at 1-1 for the young season and is the first of
Andrea Gorton's career as Tech's head coach.
Tech opened its goal-scoring account for 2022 through
Danielle Dunn in the 21
st minute. The redshirt sophomore took a cross from classmate
Alyssa Williams and scored eight yards out from Gaby Smola's goal.
The visitors doubled their lead in the 38
th minute, this time on an unassisted 18-yard effort from graduate student Rebecca Delgado Campins. The Majorca, Spain, native's goal capped a sold first-half effort that saw the Orange and Black outshoot GSU 9-5 and force Smola to make two saves. Redshirt sophomore
Michaela Bitle stopped the only Jaguar shot that found its way on target – a 33
rd minute attempt from Grace McLaughlin.
Tech came out of the halftime break on a tear, forcing two more Smola saves in the first five minutes on shots from
Alina Garcia and
AnnaBella Kowalczyk. The assault on the Jaguar goal continued in the 56
th minute with a
Dani Blagojevic shot that produced yet another Smola save.
Governor's State came to life in the 62
nd, with Princess Magadan's initial effort leading to a corner kick. Bitle saved Emely Oviedo's strike off of the set-piece routine and then saw two more GSU attempts go high in the 63
rd and 65
th minutes.
Stoppages for substitutions and fouls were the story of the final 15 minutes, as Tech looked to kill off the game and GSU (0-1) searched for a way back from the deficit. Tech maintained an 18-12 advantage in shots for the game while each team earned three corner kicks. Bitle claimed the clean sheet with four saves.
Indiana Tech continues its five-match road swing to start the season at Bethel University (Ind.) on Saturday, Sept. 10. The 7 PM match kicks off in Mishawaka, Ind., on BU's Morey Field. Tech and the Pilots each own three victories in the series, with the Warriors on a three-match win streak, including a 2-1 triumph on Sept. 11, 2021, in Ft. Wayne. Blagojevic netted the overtime game-winner in that contest a year ago.
