Somerville Breaks Triple Jump Record To Highlight Facility Opener

FORT WAYNE, Ind. --  The Indiana Tech indoor track and field team opened up the new Doug Edgar Indoor Track facility in fine fashion on Friday afternoon as several Warriors hit NAIA standards and others saw their names etched into the school's record books.

Shomari Somerville picked up a big win in the men's triple jump, breaking the school record with a mark of 15.11m (49'7").  The previous standard (15.06m) was set by Alain Dixon in 2016.  As of Friday evening, Somerville's mark is #2 in the nation among NAIA jumpers.

Jamaya Warthen continued her impressive start to the season with wins in both the 60m and 200m.  She posted a 7.64 in the 60m to edge teammate Soyinne Grenyion (7.71) before coming back for a photo finish victory in the 200 (25.44).

The 600m featured as elite a field as may be found before the national championships.  Huntington's Addy Wiley picked up the win ahead of Indiana Tech's Lisa Voyles, who ran 1:33.91 to post the 3rd best mark in school history.  Voyles performance earned her a fourth NAIA "A" standard this season (600, 1000, Mile, 3000).

Javon Sanders came up big in the 60 hurdles, winning in a time of 8.02.  It was not only a PR for Sanders, but the new #4 mark in the record books.  Sanders joins Ahumad Williams (#2) and Collins Mokuah (#5) as members of this year's squad in the all-time top five in the event.

Reigning indoor national champion Juanita Webster-Freeman finished 2nd in the high jump in 1.67m (5'5.75") to push her existing NAIA "B" mark to an "A".  She was followed closely by Mary Catherine Lee (1.64m), who notched her name on the NAIA "B" list.

Additional Highlights:

Krista Boese earned an NAIA "B" standard in the 1000m with a new all-time #3 mark of 3:02.19.

Jo'Deci Irby (59.34) and Kennia Dexter (59.37) cruised to a 1-2 finish in the women's 400 to earn NAIA "B" standards.

Tayvahr Wright finished second in the high jump with a mark of 2.01m (6'7.25") to also earn a "B".

Savannah Emaus improved her all-time #10 mark in the pole vault (3.32m).

Mason Murphy reached 16.01m in the weight throw to move to #4 all-time.

Jaelin Stewart earned an NAIA "B" mark with a long jump of 7.0m.
