FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women's hockey team faced off against the Michigan State University Spartans in a CCWHA series over the weekend. Friday evening, the Warriors were on the road in Michigan's state capital, Lansing, to open the two-game series at Munn Ice Arena, where an overtime goal saw Tech win 2-1. On Saturday afternoon, Tech was back home to close the series with a 6-0 win over the Spartans. The Orange and Black remain perfect in the young season, sitting at 6-0-0.
On Friday, in the series opener, neither team could find the net in the first period and went into the first intermission with the game locked at 0-0. The Warriors would find the net first in the second period to open their account for the game off the stick of
Megan Yakiwchuk, assisted by
Dakota Bowler. The Warrior's lead would last just under 11 minutes as the Spartans knotted the game 1-1 with less than two minutes left in the period. After another scoreless period, the two teams were headed to overtime, the first overtime of the season for the Warriors. After assisting the first goal,
Dakota Bowler found the net for the game-winner off an assist from
Ashley Episcopo.
Izzy Varner played the whole game in goal for the Warriors with 37 saves.
On Saturday, the Warriors had a slow start, as neither team found the net in the first period. Coming out of the first intermission, it was all Tech,
Genessie Williams scored a solo goal that opened the gate for the Warriors, scoring three more goals in the second period from
Michelle Borland,
Lauren Younker, and
Hailey Terpstra. To close the game, the Orange and Black found the net twice in the final period from
Megan Yakiwchuk and
Michelle Borland. Recording assists for the Warriors were
Genessie Williams (2),
Arina Jusczak, and
Izzy Pettem-Shand.
Izzy Varner was a brick wall for the Warriors in net as she posted 39 saves on her way to earning the shutout.
Tech is on the road for their next two games as they travel to Niagara Falls, New York, to face Niagara University in a two-game series. Friday's game has a start time of 8:00 p.m., while Saturday's game begins at 3:00 p.m.
