FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women's basketball team hosted the Madonna University Crusaders on Saturday for their first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference home game. The Warriors took advantage of a dominant second quarter to win 69-53 over the Crusaders in the Schaefer Center. The Orange and Black move to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.
Erika Foy opened the game by scoring a jump shot, but the Crusaders responded quickly with an 11-4 run, which gave them an 11-6 lead at the 6:02 mark in the first quarter. The Crusader lead didn't last long as the Warriors scored on consecutive trips to draw level with 5:26 left. The remainder of the first had a similar pattern as the Crusaders extended their lead, but the Warriors fought back to enter the first break trailing 20-18. The Warrior defense picked up in the second quarter as they held the Crusaders to 9 points, while Tech's offense got into a rhythm, scoring 22 to take an 11-point 40-29 lead into the halftime break. The Warriors kept the same defensive intensity in the third quarter, limiting the Crusader offense to 10 points, and went into the fourth quarter leading 51-39. In the fourth quarter, the Warriors kept the Crusaders at bay, not allowing them a way back into the game as they won 69-53.
The Warrior offense was led by
Erika Foy, who recorded a double-double with 23 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 assists.
Genevieve Decker was the other Warrior to score double-digits with 17 points while also contributing 6 rebounds and 2 assists.
Korryn Smith and
Taylor Covington both scored 7 points apiece, while Smith added 4 rebounds and 1 assist, as Covington grabbed 4 rebounds and added 2 assists.
Tech travels north to take on Cleary University for their next contest on Tuesday, November 21
st. This will be the first meeting between the two schools, as it is Cleary's inaugural season for men's and women's basketball.
