FORT WAYNE, Ind – The Indiana Tech Warriors Women's Hockey team hosted #14 ranked Grand Valley State University on Friday night, and then made their way to Grand Rapids (MI) on Saturday to end the two-game series with a weekend sweep. The Warriors blew away Grand Valley at home with a 4-0 victory on Friday night and battled hard on Saturday ending with a 1-0 overtime win on the road. The Warriors moved to 12-2-0 on the season with the wins.
In game one, the first period of play ended with no goals from either team, but Tech dominated the first period ending it with 24 shots on goal, as the Warriors could not find the back of the net. Nearing four minutes of play in the second period, the Warriors found a way to take the lead, as Arina Jusczack finds a tip from the point assisted by Mikayla Kalverda and Sophie Kuzminski. Almost three minutes later, Tech finds a way again making it 2-0 early in the second, scored by Michelle Borland on an unassisted goal. Quickly after, Hailey Terpstra makes it 3-0 for the Warriors finding the net from the top of the left circle, assisted by Caylee Crowson. Izzy Varner earned the win in goal for the Warriors, making nine saves.
In game two of the series, the Warriors were looking for another victory to end the weekend with a sweep but were unable to find a way to tally in regular period play. The Warriors dominated every period, having 60 shots in total, but unfortunately could not bury in regular time, taking it to extra time. As the Warriors battled into overtime, not long into the five minutes of overtime play, Genessie Williams finds a way to the back of the net, assisted by Michelle Borland leading the team to a 1-0 overtime victory on the road. Ashtyn Berthiaume made 25 saves, earning her first career win and a shutout.
The Warriors are back for another weekend series after this upcoming weekend off, playing Concordia University away on Friday December 1st , and at home Saturday December 2nd located at the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse, with the puck scheduled to drop at 4pm here in Fort Wayne.
