FORT WAYNE Ind- The Indiana Tech Warriors Women's hockey team played a two-game series against the Concordia University Cardinals, one on the road on Friday night in Ann Arbor (MI), and one back at home on Saturday with a result of splitting the series, losing on Friday night, and winning on Saturday. The Warriors moved to 13-3-0 on their season after the weekend split.
In game one, the Warriors gave many scoring opportunities for the Cardinals in the first period, leading Concordia to find the back of the net first, late in the first period. The Warriors tried to find a way to tie it up in the second period, but Concordia didn't back down scoring again making it 2-0 early in the second period. Going into the third, the Warriors had to battle hard to try and tie it up or gain the lead, but the Cardinals found a way again making the Warriors down 3-0 early in the third period. Soon after, Gennessie Wiliams finds the back of the net on a power play goal assisted by Dakota Bowler, making It 3-1 now for Concordia. As the Warriors tried to climb their way back up to the top, Ashley Episcopo drilled one in the back of the net making it 3-2 with the Cardinals still in front. With the score being tight, the Warriors fought to tie it up to potentially win the game in the end. The Cardinals had other intentions as they scored to make it 4-2 with three minutes of play remaining in the third period. Warriors' goalie Izzy Varner was pulled to put an extra man on the ice hoping to score some points, but Concordia dug deep and found the back of the empty net making it a result of 5-2 for Concordia University. Izzy Varner played in net for Tech saving 28 shots in total.
In the second game, the Warriors gave the Cardinals major redemption as the Warriors totaled 11 goals in one game, and only gave up one goal. With only one minute into the first period, Payton Gilmour scores her first collegiate goal from the point, assisted by Dakota Bowler, making Tech up 1-0 early in the first. The Warriors did not let their foot off the gas pedal, as Sophie Kuzminski scored, assisted by Arina Juszcak and Lauren Younker, then another goal scored by Michelle Borland, assisted by Lauren Younker and Genessie Williams. With Tech being up 3-0 in the second, Halle Murray scores her first collegiate goal as well, assisted by Hailey Terpstra and Reilly Crowson making it 4-0. Three more goals were scored in the second period, two for the Warriors by Genessie Williams, assisted by Michelle Borland and Ashley Episcopo, and Dakota Bowler, assisted by Megan Yakiwchuk, and Concordia scoring their only point of the game in the second period as well. The Warriors went into the third period leading the way 6-1, and not long after the start of the period Dakota Bowler scores her second of the night assisted by Allison Greene and Michelle Borland. Soon after, Reilly Crowson scores back-to-back goals assisted by Payton Gilmour and Halle Murray. The last two goals of the game scored by the Warriors go to Sophie Kuzminski assisted by Arina Jusczack and Lauren Younker and Dakota Bowler with a hattrick ending off the game with an unassisted goal. The Warriors ended with a huge 11-1 victory against Concordia University. Freshman Ashtyn Berthiaume played all 60 minutes saving 15 shots in goal for the Warriors.
The Warriors are back for another series this week against their rivals No. 3 ranked Adrian College. They will be playing Adrian on the road on Thursday, December 7th in Michigan, and then at home on Friday, December 8th at 7pm at the Sport ONE/Parkview Icehouse for their last series before the Christmas break.
