Warriors Outlast Cougars in Cross-Town Rivalry

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women's basketball team hosted cross-town rival, University of Saint Francis (Ind.), for their first home game of the season in the Schaefer Center. After a tough trip to Kentucky, the Warriors looked to get back on track and accomplished their goal with a dramatic 80-76 rivalry win. The Orange and Black move to 2-1 on the young season.

The Warriors opened the game with a layup from Juliana Burris and would keep things close through the remainder of the first quarter as they entered the first break trailing 22-19. In the second quarter, the Warriors struggled shooting from the floor, making 3 of their 13 attempts. The lack of Warrior offense allowed the Cougars to establish a 14-point 45-31 lead entering halftime. The script flipped in the third quarter as the Cougars were the ones experiencing shooting issues, making just 3 of their 14 attempts. Along with the poor shooting, the Cougars got into early foul trouble, which allowed Tech to get back into the game at the charity stripe and Tech took advantage as the Warriors outscored the Cougars 22-9 in the third to bring the game back to a 1-point game going into the fourth quarter. Erika Joy opened the final quarter with a jump shot, which gave the Warriors their first lead since the first quarter. The Orange and Black stretched their lead to 5 in the fourth quarter, but the Cougars were reluctant to go quietly as they came back to take a 3-point lead of their own. The Warriors made their free throws down the stretch to ensure the 80-76 win.

Juliana Burris led the Warriors offensively with 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists. Genevieve Decker posted 16 points, with 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Erika Foy and Korryn Smith were the other two Warriors in double figures, with 15 and 12, respectively. Foy grabbed 4 rebounds, while Smith had 2 boards with 2 assists.

The Warriors now prepare to start their run in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference as they travel to Adrian, Michigan, to face Siena Heights in their first conference game. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 11.
